A conversation that in our opinion we don't have often enough, is the influence that lifestyle, diet, and nutrition have on our long term eye & vision health. The old adage of an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of the cure applies here. At Brownsville Eye Center we are Optometrist, Opticians, and Eye Doctors that live locally here in Brownsville Texas. We love what we do, and we love the opportunities we have to help our patients maximize their vision, and through yearly exams and education, we believe it is our responsibility to communicate the most relevant issues that can preserve and maximize their vision and the health of their vision system.
Diet - minimize inflammatory foods such as carbohydrates, processed foods, and refined sugars. Maximize regular fresh vegatable intake (don't forget the green leafy veg). Regularly consume fresh fruit and in terms of meat don't forget to rotate in the meats high in omega 3 like salmon. Healthy eyes require a healhty balanced diet and making this a focus in your daily life will have profound impacts on your long term systemic and vision health.
Excercise - Daily physical excersise that puts your heart rate in the 120-140 range for about 45 minutes is highly beneficial to the health of the human system. Regular Sauna use or cold therapy if possible, is also something worth considering.
Sleep - make an effort to get 8 hours of sleep. Make sure to get sun exposure on your skin for 15 minutes early in the morning upon awakening. This sun exposure is critical to Vitamin D production which is necessary for a healthy immune system and also will help regulate your sleep cycle. Avoid screens and bright lights in the latter parts of the day before bed.
Yearly eye exams - Our Optometrists at Brownsville Eye Center highly recommend a thorough comprehensive eye exam each year. This is the surest path to being able to address eye health concerns proactively and ensure the visual system is operating optimally. If you are overdue for your yearly eye exam with us, call to schedule your appointment today.
